This is a full-time, on-site Miscellaneous Steel Estimator role located in York, SC. As a Miscellaneous Steel Estimator, you will be responsible for preparing accurate and detailed estimates for a wide range of structural and miscellaneous steel projects. This includes analyzing project specifications and drawings, collaborating with architects, clients, and internal teams, and preparing detailed cost estimates and proposals. You will also be expected to manage bid timelines, identify potential cost-saving opportunities, and ensure compliance with project requirements.

Qualifications

  • Proven ability in reading and interpreting blueprints, technical drawings, and project specifications
  • Experience in estimating, cost analysis, and bid preparation for structural and miscellaneous steel projects
  • Proficiency in estimation software, spreadsheet tools, and other relevant applications
  • Strong project management, organizational, and time management skills
  • Effective communication, collaboration, and problem-solving abilities
  • Familiarity with construction codes, standards, and safety requirements
  • Bachelor’s degree in construction management, engineering, or a related field (preferred)
  • Experience in steel fabrication or the construction industry is a plus

Job Summary:

As a Project Engineer Intern at SteelFab, you’ll work closely with our Preconstruction and Project Management teams. You’ll take on responsibilities that will enhance your skills and prepare you for a successful career in the steel construction industry.

*This is an office-based position. Primary job duties will not be on project sites or manufacturing environments.

Key Responsibilities:

Preconstruction

  1. Gather subcontractor pricing for new project estimates.
  2. Review and analyze subcontractor bids to ensure alignment with project specifications.
  3. Perform detailed material and labor take-offs.
  4. Prepare pricing recaps for senior leadership.
  5. Visit job sites to see job progress and build relationships with clients and vendors
  6. Fabrication Shop Week: Gain hands-on experience with SteelFab’s fabrication flow and production processes to deepen your understanding of the steel construction lifecycle.

Project Management

  1. Project Management duties will be based on project schedules. Example duties:
  2. Draft and issue purchase orders and subcontracts to vendors.
  3. Evaluate design drawing revisions to identify and manage scope changes effectively.
  4. Manage the coordination of construction drawings and models and review submittals.
  5. Collaborate with onsite subcontractors to identify and resolve field issues.

Job Summary:

Difficult fabrication of steel parts by reading blueprints and building to specifications using hand held power tools and track type oxy-fuel cutting apparatus with minimum supervision.

Essential Job Functions

1. Lay out rises, slopes and bevels using framing squares.
2. Lay out and build fixtures.
3. Pass tack weld test in 3F and 4F positions with F4 electrode group.
4. Interpret structural steel blue prints (shop drawings).
5. Be able to camber.
6. Operate 90° angle grinder.
7. Heat straighten using torch.
8. Operate cutting torch.
9. Utilize impact wrench to tighten bolts.
10. Operate overhead pendent controlled bridge crane safely and efficiently.
11. Fabricate truss and rolled beam.
12. Operate radiograph/ track torch.
13. Be qualified welder (class “C”).
14. Perform other duties as required by management.

Qualifications and Requirements
Required: High school education or equivalent. Basic knowledge of ASIC code of standard practices and AWS D1.1 Chapter 3 (workmanship). Ability to read tape measure to 1/16” increments and add / subtract dimensions. Ability to read weld symbols and basic knowledge of structural steel fasteners. Must be able to lift a minimum of 50 lbs. Should be knowledgeable in procedures 401, 402, 403, 404, 405.
Preferred: Two or more years experience in manufacturing in the steel fabrication industry. Proficiency and use of Software, equipment, machines, tools, electronic device necessary for job:
Squares (combination, bevel, frame), 90° angle grinder, crane, torch, impact wrench, radiograph/track torch, reamers, and magnetic drills.
